KOKONUT Culture Editor’s Note. Kim Seol-jin, a choreographer and dancer from Jeju, began his artistic journey in the world of contemporary dance after a background in street dance and b-boying. His stage work goes beyond movement itself, pursuing the idea of “telling stories through motion,” and exploring the relationships between body, story, space, and emotion to create powerful experiences for the audience. In his piece Sinfonia, built on a 30-minute b-boying structure, he once said, “The dancers became the scenery.” His artistic motto is to ask, “Why does this movement exist?” rather than simply showing technique. He believes dance should embody existence, relationships, and time—not just beauty. Having worked in both Korea and Europe, he reflects on the differences between the two dance ecosystems and questions whether “a life sustained purely by dance” is possible. Through these explorations, Kim has sought new visions for Korean contemporary dance—forming Mover, a creative collective for collaboration, experimentation, and the breaking of boundaries. His dual experience in street and contemporary dance represents the layered identity of Korean dance culture and offers a new lens for interpreting “K-Movement” or “K-Dance” globally. He can be introduced as “a boundary-crossing explorer of Korean dance,” with interview or video content focusing on movement, identity, cultural contrast, and the everyday life of a dancer. 김설진은 제주 출신으로 스트리트 댄스와 비보잉 배경을 거쳐 현대무용의 세계에 입문한 다채로운 이력을 지닌 안무가이자 무용가입니다. 그의 무대는 단순한 몸짓을 넘어서 ‘움직임으로 이야기하기’라는 확장을 추구해왔으며, “몸과 이야기, 공간과 관계”를 탐구하는 작업을 통해 관객에게 강렬한 경험을 남깁니다. 예컨대 그는 비보이단과 함께 30분간 비보잉 기반으로 현대무용적 구조를 구성한 작품 <신포니아>에서 “댄서들이 풍경이 되었다”고 말한 바 있습니다. 그의 예술적 모토는 ‘움직임에서 왜 이렇게 되었을까’라는 질문을 던지는 데 있습니다. 그는 단순히 기술을 보여주기보다, 그 동작이 왜 나왔는지를 탐구하며, 춤이 미(美)만을 위한 것이 아니라 존재·관계·시간을 담아야 한다고 믿습니다. 또한 그는 한국과 유럽에서 활동하며 두 문화권의 무용 생태계를 비교했고, “춤만으로도 먹고살 수 있는 구조가 있는가”에 대해 자문해왔습니다. 이런 변화와 탐색의 과정은 한국 무용계에서의 한계를 인식하고, 해외 단체 경험을 통해 얻은 새로운 시야를 통해 한국 현대무용가로서 새로운 비전을 세우게 했습니다. 그는 단체가 아닌 창작집단 ‘무버’의 형태를 통해 함께 실험하고, 장르 경계를 허물며, 춤을 ‘놀이이자 실험’으로 재발견하고자 합니다. 스트리트 댄스와 현대무용이라는 두 축을 넘나드는 그의 경력은 ‘한국 춤 문화’의 이중적인 면모를 보여주며, 특히 해외에서 ‘K-무브먼트’ 혹은 ‘K-댄스’의 새로운 관점으로 접근할 수 있는 요소가 많습니다. “한국 춤의 숨은 경계 횡단자”로 포지셔닝할 수 있으며, 인터뷰나 영상 콘텐츠로 몸·움직임·경계의 이야기, 한국과 유럽의 비교, 춤인의 일상 등을 다룰 수 있습니다. キム・ソルジンは済州出身の振付師・ダンサーで、ストリートダンスやブレイクダンスを経て現代舞踊の世界に入りました。彼の舞台は単なる動きではなく、「動きで物語る」というテーマを追求し、身体・物語・空間・関係を探ることで観客に強い印象を残します。代表作『シンフォニア』では「ダンサーたちが風景になった」と語りました。彼のモットーは「なぜこの動きになったのか？」という問いを持つことです。テクニックを見せるだけでなく、動作の理由を探り、舞踊は美のためだけでなく存在・関係・時間を表すものだと考えています。韓国とヨーロッパで活動し、二つの文化の舞踊環境を比較しながら、「踊りだけで生きられる構造があるのか」を問い続けています。こうした探求を通して、韓国の現代舞踊に新しいビジョンを築き、創作集団「ムーバー」を結成しました。実験と協働を通してジャンルの壁を越え、踊りを「遊びであり実験」として再発見しています。ストリートと現代舞踊の両分野を横断する彼の経歴は、韓国舞踊文化の二面性を示し、海外では「K-Movement」や「K-Dance」として新しい視点を提供します。彼は「韓国舞踊の境界を越える探求者」として紹介でき、インタビューや映像で身体・動き・文化の境界や日常をテーマにすることができます。
